Plans for the first live broadcast of the birth of a panda cub were dashed Thursday, when keepers in China discovered that a six-year-old panda wasn't pregnant after all and may have faked her pregnancy to get more food and attention. "Phantom pregnancies" are common in the panda world; only 24 percent of female pandas in captivity give birth. Six-year-old giant panda, Ai Lin, showed all the signs of pregnancy and was receiving around-the-clock care — including air conditioning and extra bamboo — leading one panda expert to suggest it was all a clever ruse.
